Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive removal of a gallbladder. This procedure is performed for gallstone related pathology. Patients may present with an array of clinical pictures. Gallstone colic is intense intermittent pain on the right-hand side of the upper abdomen. An acutely inflamed gallbladder demonstrates a thick wall on abdominal ultrasound. The ultrasound may also help in diagnosing associated complications e.g. a dilated common bile duct or choledochus. This may be due to a common bile duct stone or choledocholithiasis. This entity may completely obstruct the bile duct causing jaundice. A stone passing the Sphincter of Oddi may trigger pancreatitis.
